Fire Safety in Normal Heights
Gerald Shoelen, VP of Normal Heights for Smart Growth, has been diligently coordinating fire safety measures between the City, the Carmelite Monastery, and SDGE. Following active engagement from the Council District 9 office, both SDFD and Code compliance are now actively involved.
Exciting progress has been made as SDGE agreed to raise the fence on 33rd and Mountain View to meet code compliance requirements. Additionally, SDGE is working on a meeting with the Monastery and city representatives to discuss fence repairs on Camino del Rio S.
To bolster safety, Gerald requested the Monastery to submit a Letter of Agency request, allowing SDPD to enter the easement space as needed. SDGE will be clearing brush around gates and the canyon area around high voltage power lines in compliance with City regulations.

Planning Commission to Consider SB10 Adoption
Neighbors For A Better San Diego needs volunteers to cede (yield) time to their speakers at the August 3rd Planning Commission meeting where the Commissioners will again be considering SB 10.
If you can attend the meeting IN PERSON on Tuesday August 8th and cede your time to one of the speakers, please let them know by submitting
the form at the bottom of this page
.
To cede time, you need to attend the meeting at 202 C Street, 12th Floor by 9 AM, fill out a Speaker Slip (provided at the door), and raise your hand when your name is called.
If the city approves
Housing Action Plan 2.0 with SB10 provisions
, it would be the first city in California to do so, adding complexity to zoning regulations on individual parcels. SB10 is considered redundant with existing programs and unnecessary for achieving housing goals.

Tell the City What to Fund!
The City is seeking your input by August 15th to prioritize funding for roads, sidewalks, parks, libraries, public safety facilities, and more. This is your opportunity to make sure Normal Heights is not ignored.
Let the city know we need our share of funding:
Parks and Recreation – Ward Canyon Park is the only significant park in the district and it is incomplete. The city needs to invest our tax dollars in parks for Normal Heights and not rely solely on Caltrans funding. – Ward Canyon Park is the only significant park in the district and it is incomplete. Libraries – Normal Heights does not have a dedicated library and the shared one in Kensington is very small.
Mobility – With the planned addition of the Felton Street bridge there should be a way to walk from the heights to Mission Valley safely. Traffic calming is also long overdue.
Public Safety and General Services – Improvements to the urban/wildland
interface for fire protection.
Enterprise and Fee Funded – Utility Undergrounding is behind schedule and water/sewer upgrades are long overdue.
It's important to note that Developer Impact Fees are now collected and distributed city-wide. Therefore, we must raise our voices to receive our fair share

Are you interested in shaping the future of our neighborhood? Do you have ideas for how to make our community more vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive? If so, please consider joining the Normal Heights Community Planning Group (NHCPG).
As a member of the Planning Group, you can work with other members of the community to advise the city on matters related to land use, zoning, and development in Normal Heights. You will gain valuable leadership experience and have the opportunity to network with community and city leaders. You will be able to advocate for the interests of our community, make a positive impact on our neighborhood, and help ensure that Normal Heights continues to thrive.
We are especially interested in encouraging participation from members of our community who have been historically underrepresented in local government. We believe that a diversity of perspectives and experiences is essential to creating a planning group that truly represents the interests of all Normal Heights.
If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of the Normal Heights Community Planning Group, please contact
chair@normalheightscpg.org. We look forward to hearing from you and working together to shape the future of our community.
Thank you for making Normal Heights a better place to live, play, and work!
