We are so excited to announce that the next stage of building the Normal Heights Community Garden is here! In coordination with the City Council District 9 Office and the SD Department of Parks and Recreation, we are participating in an event at Ward Canyon Park and Normal Heights Community Garden on Saturday February 7th from 9AM to Noon. This will be an opportunity for our community to engage in the beautification of the Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park and help us distribute mulch, donated by the City of San Diego, at the Community Garden. The City is providing a few rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows but feel free to bring your own! There will be activities for all ages and abilities so come on out and meet your neighbors and celebrate this new phase of development for the community garden that we have all been waiting and working for! There will be refreshments courtesy of sponsors The Selby Team

AB-3074 (2020)
was enacted to create a wildfire, ember-resistant area, known as Zone 0, within 5 feet of any home or structure in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. This new law was recently finalized by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection
to provide the public with the necessary details on how to comply by removing combustible materials like mulch, dead plants, wooden fences and replacing them with hardscaping like gravel, stone, or concrete to prevent wildfire embers turning landscaping into kindling. |
To see if you live in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone refer to the official map published by the City of San Diego
in collaboration with Cal Fire. Recommended Features and Materials gives neighbors and community groups clear steps to take now to be ready for emergencies like wildfires, earthquakes, heat waves, floods, and power outages.
- Hardscaping: Gravel, pavers, concrete, or rock are permitted and are a crucial part of creating an ember-resistant zone.
- Potted Plants: A limited number of potted plants may be allowed if they meet specific criteria:
- 18 inches or shorter.
- In non-combustible containers no larger than five gallons.
- Placed away from windows, doors, or vents.
- Moved out of Zone 0 during high fire-risk periods (like Red Flag Warnings).
- Trees are allowed in Zone 0 as long as they are maintained and their lower branches are pruned to prevent fire from climbing into the canopy of the tree.
- Movable Furniture: Metal or other non-combustible outdoor furniture is allowed.

Parks & Recreation SurveyPlease help shape the future of Parks and Recreation program offerings in San Diego to make them more inclusive and equitable, reflecting the needs of our community. All responses will be reported in aggregate, and you will not be individually identified. The deadline to complete the survey

Sewer and Water Main Updates It's not hard to see the construction equipment lining the street along East Mountain View Drive at 35th Street. What is harder to see from the street is the extent of the work being done. |
This is the Adams North Improvement Project to install or replace sewer and water lines in Normal Heights. Expect this project to work its way west of the course of the year. A map of the project can be viewed here
. For additional information contact Vic Salazar vic@vicsalazar.com
New Developments
- 35th and Adams appears to still be owned by Nikols Mortgage, the lender that foreclosed on the property.
- The owners of the Rite Aid property are currently negotiating two offers upwards of $20 million.
- A mixed use apartment building slated for construction where the hair salon next to Bica is located is still in the permitting process.
- No news on the construction across from Blind Lady Ale House which has been dormant for months.
