Library and Park Funding Battle
The Mayor’s proposed budget will squeeze
$8 million from our historically underfunded libraries, parks and recreation centers. Our District 9 council representative, Sean Elo-Rivera is working to make this right by garnering vocal and written support from constituents to impress upon the Mayor the importance of these services and facilities to communities.
The
City Council meeting on May 19th had a good turnout from communities across the region, including Normal Heights, urging the city to continue these essential services. Studies have shown for every dollar invested in libraries, ten dollars are returned to the community.
The strong mayor system of government in San Diego makes this an uphill battle for the City Council which needs strong community support to strengthen their case to the Mayor!
Let the city know our library is important to our community.
New Normal Heights Fire Safe Council
Normal Heights has its very own Fire Safe Council thanks to the efforts of Susan Redelings, Bob Redelings, Jen Eve Thorn, Madison Stevens, and Jim Baross. The Fire Safe Council has already taken part in hosting a Fire Safe Forum with SD Fire-Rescue, SD County Fire, and Cal Fire to get status updates and discuss the new fire hazard zone maps published by the Office of the State Fire Marshall in March.
Due in large part to this and similar citizen efforts, the new fire hazard zone map will be updated by the city to include known fire hazard areas that were left off the map! The importance of this update cannot be understated as it is a first step in preventing the tragedy that recently occured in Pacific Palisades and Altadena.
Normal Heights is no stranger to urban wildfire and the new Normal Heights Fire Safety Council will be hosting an event soon commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Normal Heights Fire of June 30, 1985.

Community Garden Progress
The preparation of the ground is partially complete but much work is still to be done. We need people to keep pitching in, in every way.
- Help weed (we have a handy tool for this)
- Help us finish layout of solarizing plastic (this kills weeds and weed seeds)
- Join the garden club (reply to this email for details)
- Donate to the garden fund (tax deductible!)

Thank you for making Normal Heights a better place to live, play, and work! You can support our efforts below.
